I will encourage you to embrace whole foods that fuel your body, as well as creating lifestyle changes that enable you to make better choices and take care of yourself from the inside out.
Being healthy isn’t just about the food we eat, it includes other factors that affect our eating, our relationships, physical activity, our spiritual life and our mindset.
Like so many of you, I grew up eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). Living in the South we had a lot of good ole southern food. I remember eating Fried Seafood, sugary cereals like Frosted Flakes and Lucky Charms during the week and my moms amazing pancakes with bacon or sausage on the weekends. Lunches consisted of mostly sandwiches with processed meat, an apple, 2 chocolate chip cookies, and a coke. Then dinner was a meat, vegetable and starch or casseroles with pasta and cheese! Not exactly healthy now looking back. I was petite in the 9th grade I noticed an extra few pounds creep up on me even though I was running track, cross country and playing tennis. That’s when I remember going on my first diet to loose a few pounds.
Fast forward many years later. Marriage, 3 babies, a divorce, and then losing a good paying job. I was stressed out and not taking care of myself. Unfortunately, it got worse. I went to have a baseline mammogram at 35 years old. A biopsy a few days later supported a cancer diagnosis. I thought I was healthy, I looked healthy, and I exercised. So what happened?
This is when I became obsessed with nutrition and feeding my body properly. It didn’t happen overnight either. It took many years of reading and research. I didn’t have the genetic gene (for breast cancer) so I knew it was my diet and the environment. I have learned which foods make me feel better and stronger as well as the foods that don’t. I started to share the information I was learning with friends and family on Facebook a few years ago. To my surprise people were thanking me for sharing and asked me to keep it up. I remember reading a post online and saw an ad to become a Health Coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, then I saw a post where Dr Mark Hyman, a well-respected Functional Medicine Physician and 11 times New York Times best-selling author, spoke highly of the school. I started thinking, I could go back to school and become a Health Coach. I was already passionate about health and wellness, this jump started my journey.
So here I am, years later, a certified Health and Wellness Coach, as well as a certified Yoga instructor. My passion is to help others learn how to use food as fuel to feel their best! No one diet or lifestyle works for everyone. With all the fad diets and confusing information on what’s good for you and what’s not, it’s no wonder why people have given up on health. I’m here to change that and show you how you can achieve your health goals.
My philosophy is to find your balance of the good and not so good, while increasing energy, reducing stress, nurturing relationships, and having fun! I follow the 80/20 rule. At home I eat as clean as I can and try to stay in and cook during the week. Then on weekends or nights out with friends, I allow myself to relax and treat myself, that’s the other 20%. I have a non-judgmental coaching style. I will encourage and motivate you to follow the program but it’s up to you to be willing to take a new step each day. Change doesn’t happen overnight, it should happen slowly to become a lifestyle habit.
